Roy Newby’s illustration work went on until, in his sixties, he was finally able to retire and concentrate on painting and exhibiting full-time, an ambition he had nurtured all his life.

After a long illness, Marjorie died in 1975.

Roy later married Marcella, also a painter, and they lived together for over twenty years in a flat overlooking the River Thames in Barnes.

After Marcella’s death, he lived on there alone until, in 2009, in failing health, he moved to a nursing-home in Sussex at the age of 97.

He died there in August 2011.
